The Orientalist goes to Europe

Pedro Bonatto de Castro September 23, 2015

I'm excited to announce that I'll be shooting some scenes for 'The Orientalist' series in Sofia, Larnaca and Kiev in October and November, 2015. So far, the series has been shot in Toronto and surrounding cities. Toronto is a truly multicultural place, with almost half of its population being from abroad. I'm really happy to be doing part of the project here, but the opportunity presented itself to take it abroad.

Dancer Iana Komarnytska and I are performing and teaching drumming/dancing workshops in Bulgaria, Cyprus and Ukraine, and I thought it would be great to connect with local dancers and musicians and create some scenes there.

I'm planning shoots right now, so if you know of dancers and musicians at those places that might be interested in participating in the series, send me a message bellow :)

Here is the schedule for my trip:

Sofia, Bulgaria - Oct 21 to Oct 26

Larnaca, Cyprus - Oct 27 to Nov 3

Kiev, Ukraine - Nov 4 to Nov 16

Yesterday I released a second solo episode for the new season of the Wanderings Podcast. I am really happy to share insights into my path of becoming an artist, a traveler, a small business owner in a digital landscape, and I hope some lessons of that journey can be useful to you.

Around the World in Ukrainian Fashion
Around the World in Ukrainian Fashion

As a photographer and musician, I am in love with mixing ethnic elements from different cultures and exploring ancient places. These are themes that come back again and again in my work, and today I’m happy to share a little experiment with the talented model and dancer Tetiana Tesliuk in Egypt. This is the first in a series of photos showcasing Ukrainian artists in traditional outfits at landmarks around the world, during my travels this year.

Four years on the road and 10 thousand generations of wanderers.
Four years on the road and 10 thousand generations of wanderers.

My 8-month stay in Egypt comes to an end in 10 days. I suddenly realized I’ve been on the road - technically with no home - for almost four years. The goal was not to become a perpetual traveler, but to take the time to experience cultures that call to me, to go on a creative pilgrimage and stay at different places around the world long enough to make them feel like home.

Dreams are Maps
Dreams are Maps

My favorite author, Carl Sagan, once wrote an essay called ‘Dreams are maps’, where he talked about how visions can become reality, create purpose, and inspire next generations.
